Week 1, 1/20/11 - Welcome
o Introductions, syllabus handout and review.
o Fundementals of Design “history”
Lecture-“ten commandments of type” Present type library.
o Assignment #1 given: Take The Good With The Bad. Find one good and one bad example of design that was produced in each of the 4 programs - i.e. find an example of good design that was primarily produced in Photoshop..and then a bad example. Repeat for all 4 program. Print out each example - 8 1/2 X 11 with a descriptive sentence or two below (with tacks) for each example. Be prepared to present and critique next class. Don’t forget your pins...NOT TACKS! Assignment due 1/27/11.
o Assignment #2 given: Word Poster (Illustrator-centric): First, sign-up/in for your lynda.com account. once you do, you’ll have access to all the modules that we’ll be working through in class. the first one is “illustrator, CS5 - essential training.” Start going through the module as soon as possible. You have to complete the entire module and it’s 8 hours.
Then, using all you learned from your lynda.com exercises, think of a simple shape (animal, person, object), redraw it as vector artwork in illustrator and use typography (attributes) of your chosen concept to bring it to life (20 X 30 B&W Poster). For example - pick a gun, find a picture of a gun and redraw it as a vector. Then, use attributes of what you picked to make the shape. Lastly, use your graphic to create a poster - poster should contain the following elements: graphic, title and type specimen family (see example). You must first do 2 rough sketches in your sketchbook to support your visual idea (to quickly show on 1/27/11). Your final poster (20 X 30) is due on 2/3/11. This should be completed in Illustrator. HINT…these take hours to print so get these into the lab as soon as possible.
